Leonardo's bicycle
This is probably the most controversial and mysterious Leonardo drawing that has been discussed since its discovery, which took place in a fortuitous and unexpected way, between 1966 and 1968, in the laboratory of restoration of ancient books of the Esarchico Monastery of Santa Maria di Grottaferrata (Rome).
In the cleanup operations of the Codex Atlanticus, consisting of 1300 pages by Leonardo da Vinci, the monks came across two glued sheets. They decided to separate them and discovered 133 drawings on the front of the sheet: a caricature, a sketch (in which some scholars have seen two male sexual organs with legs) associated with the inscription Salai', and a bicycle. The drawings are clearly by a different hand from that of Leonardo, which the scholars of the time attributed to pupils of the master, who, as they had done on other occasions, had copied his drawings into one of the many sheets already used. So it was believed that the invention was still attributable to Leonardo, also because it was immediately associated with the chain of the Madrid I Codex which it was believed could complete the invention. Over time, two schools of thought have formed, on the one hand those in favor of the hypothesis of Leonardo's invention and, on the other, those who favor the false historical. As far as we are concerned, we took the cue from the decidedly childish drawing of the Atlantic Code, to design a bicycle much more in line with Leonardo's drawings, both from an aesthetic and a technical point of view, starting for example from the fact that it is can mount without glue, but only with jointed pieces.
